The Weight of Water is a breathtakingly brilliant debut from Sarah Crossan that I just adored getting washed up in. It
is written in verse, so it makes for a very unique and in my opinion
genius read. Everything is crisp, clean, precise and necessary. I was
deeply and emotionally involved from the very first to last pages
We are taken on a fast moving journey with a 12 year old girl, who moves to England from Poland, Her mum makes them pack up and leave in search of her father who left them.
Everything is tough for Kasienka in this new country, and she has it very hard in her new school. She is picked on and bullied by the other girls and it broke my heart. They say she looks different, she smells funny, she is never picked for teams and everything is just so horrible.
But Kasienka loves to swim, actually she is very good at it and it provides an escape for her. She even meets a boy who seems to like her for just being her.
This is a heartbreaking, brutal and very moving story that very sadly happens in today's society far too often. I just wanted to pick Kasienka up and keep her safe from all the people who do her harm.
Sarah Crossan writes absolutely beautifully and she handles the bullying topic with great care and attention to detail. She takes the reader on a fantastic journey that is packed with emotion and little rays of sunshine that peek through the gloom - giving hope.
The Weight if Water is a pretty special book that I really can't urge everyone enough to read. The ending is lovely and hopeful - I loved it!
