Unbreakable by Kami Garcia - Blog Tour!

Summary from Goodreads

Kennedy Waters didn't believe in ghosts, until one tried to kill her.

When Kennedy finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn't know that evil forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into her house and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon - a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother's place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon - battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling co-author of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

My Review

Wowsa! Kami Garcia's first solo project is seriously good! I actually don't think I've ever flew through a book so quickly, I was just dying to know what was going to happen next!

The opening scene really grabbed me 'As my bare feet sank into the wet earth, I tried not to think about the dead bodies buried beneath me.' This graveyard scene instantly intrigued me and gave me the chills!

The storyline follows Kennedy Waters, who's life is turned inside out when she finds her mother dead. Immediately 2 identical twins, Jared and Lukas Lockhart, barrel into her life like a wrecking ball, even though they start by saving her life.

The Lockhart boys reveal some seriously shocking secrets, involving a hidden society, who's job it is to protect the world. But all 5 members just so happened to have been murdered on the very same night. They introduce Kennedy to others, they think together they make up the new members of The Legion.

The others have always known about The Legion and have been trained, but this is all new to Kennedy, who will need to learn fast if she has any hopes of surviving the trials the group face - to bring down the demon responsible for the deaths of their family members.

Garcia's writing is excellent, I loved her vivid descriptors and super creepy scenes. Like this one: 'The child's face twisted into a wicked smile and her form flickered again, exposing the old woman lurking inside her.'

The world building is quite complex and I really liked learning how everything worked and also the history of The Legion. The pacing is also quite fast and rarely lets up.

I loved all the big kick-butt action that plays a big part in this story but my favourite part is how atmospheric it is in places: 'A bare bulb flickered at the opposite end of the room, revealing the truth about this place in weak bursts.'

Each scene is handled with great attention to detail and I particularly enjoyed this super creepy setting: 'A crude wooden chair with heavy armrests was bolted onto a raised platform in the center of the room, like a dead man's throne. Padded leather wrist and ankle cuffs were buckled below the thick straps that secured the prisoners chest to the chair. A coiled black wire snaked up the back and attached to a medieval-looking headpiece, with a metal band that matched the scared skin around  Darien Shears' head.'

I think we have a real mix of interesting characters in here. I really liked  Kennedy's relationship with both brothers and I was very intrigued to find out how their relationships would play out. My favourite character would have to be Jared though, he is beautifully broken and I was easily attracted to his sullen and hotheaded ways.

The ending was seriously explosive and I simply adored all of the action and shockers.

Unbreakable is a breathtaking story that is full of strong characters, kick-ass scenes and full on super creepiness. It is written so wonderfully and I really enjoyed the achingly beautiful romance and the emotion overload moments. This story is only the beginning and I can't wait to see where the adventure will take us next.

4.5 / 5 Stars!
