The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Summary from Goodreads

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning author John Green's most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

My Review

The Fault in Our Stars is such a beautiful book - tough, raw, heart breaking, but simply stunning the whole way through! To be honest it's so hard for me to even try and explain how perfect this was!

This book is sooo emotional and I'm pretty sure had readers everywhere reaching for the tissues. But I refused to cry, out of respect for the totally awesome characters, who I just simply wouldn't pity - every time I started getting emotional, I sat the book down, sorted myself out and dug straight back in again - because as hard as I found it, it was impossible to look away!

I adored the quirky characters, who lived their lives to the fullest and managed to find love even in the toughest of times. Believe it or not I laughed a lot at parts of this story, that is the beauty of it - John Green's fantastic ability to have the perfect amount of light & shade!

The storyline follows the brilliant Hazel, who has been suffering for years with cancer. She sort of just trudges along in life, but one day at her cancer kid support group, she meets a devastatingly handsome guy called Augustus Waters - who could easily charm the clouds from the sky. And from that moment on both their lives become brighter!

To be honest I couldn't for the life of me describe a more perfectly matched couple. I adored reading their beautiful journey and watching them fall in love and also fall apart!

I really liked how they tried to track down the author of their favourite book, for the answers to their nagging questions. It was annoying because people are never quite what you expect them to be and you can sometimes be left feeling disappointed.

To be truthful, the ending killed me a little. I was actually going to track down John Green (it wouldn't be hard as he's on Twitter, lol), like Hazel and Augustus did with their unanswered questions and ask him what happened to characters - but I think I will restrain myself and imagine my own outcome!

Anyway, this an absolute MUST read book from John Green that I think will relate on some level to everybody! I'm actually regretting waiting so long to read this beautiful book!

A BIG 5 Stars!

  1. Ah, this really was an emotional book, wasn't it? :') After hearing all the buzz last year I wasn't sure if it would live up to my expectations, but it really did. And the ending killed me, too! So bittersweet. Wonderful review!

  2. They were such a beautiful couple and this book broke my heart more times than I can count. I'm glad it did the same for you, I felt somehow better for having read it.
A chance to imagine your own outcome is sometimes the best gift an author can give you. Maggie Stiefvater always does this and I adore her for it.
    Great review!

  3. I did an end of the year poll on my blog and this book came up as the number one choice for best book of 2012. I have it scheduled on my blog in a month or so. I must read this even though I know it will break my heart. I want to know what all the fuss is about!

  4. I agree, one of the strengths was the humor. I don't like it when sad books feel depressing. This one is a mixture of sadness, hope and happiness. I love that.
