Second Grave on the Left By Darynda Jones

Summary from Goodreads

"If you hang around with dead people, life can deliver a whole world of trouble.""

Take it from Charley Davidson, part-time P.I. and full-time Grim Reaper. The deceased find her very sparkly. Demons find her irresistible. And one entity in particular wants to seduce her in every way possible...

When Charley and Cookie, her best friend slash receptionist, have to track down a missing woman, the case is not quite as open and shut as they anticipate. Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally.) has left his corporeal body because he's being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can't let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they'll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven...well, let's just say it wouldn't be pretty.

Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Can she keep those she loves out of harm's way? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel her as she does?

My Review

Well hot damn, not only did I love this book, it actually tops First Grave on the Right - which is quite a feat indeed!

These wonderful books pull me out of a hole, no matter how crappy things are going in my everyday life, I know I can go hang out with Charley and be guaranteed one hell of a giggle!

Miss Charley Davidson is by far my favourite fictional character EVER!!! She is quite something - super talented (in a freaky deeky sorta way), she kicks butt, is devilishly sexy and best of all she oozes snark! I just can't quite get enough of her!

Darynda's writing is right on the money and I can never manage to put her books down. The world created here is awesome and seems to be going from strength to strength!

The storyline itself is perfectly paced and interesting from start to finish. It is filled with action, sexy scenes and lots of mystery to keep you guessing.

In this instalment we see Charley's life get a lot more complicated and definitely more dangerous. She tries to get to the bottom of a case and it really does turn out to be far more than she bargained for.

But life in Charley Davidson land never runs smoothly and the case won't be the only thing she will have to contend with. The super sexy *fans self* Reyes Farrow, is hunting Charley in his corporal form but his body is being tortured by demons that are trying to find Charley!

Can Charley managed to find Reyes' body and solve her troublesome case before it's too late??

I loved the run up to the ending because we see some much needed acceptance towards Charley - which I really couldn't have been more happy about. The ending itself is an interesting sort of shocker that had me reaching for the next book - thank goodness I already had it or I would have been seriously pissed, lol!

All I can say is I am a BIG fan of all things Charley Davidson and I seriously can't praize these books enough! Hats off to Darynda Jones for such an awesome 2nd instalment! Please do go give these books a whirl today - I promise they won't disappoint!

A BIG 5 Stars!

  1. I am so glad that you are loving Darynda after you listened to me singing her praises. If you think this book was good wait until you dive into book three it is the best of the series I think. Darynda and Charley always make me laugh!

  3. I have to agree with you, Carly! Charley is such an amazing character. I love everything about her. My favorites are the first and the third book. The fourth is a bit different in tone, but Darynda promised to go back to her usual self in book five, which I'm so insanely excited about, it's not even funny.
    And Reyes... MAJOR swoon fest!
    Beautiful review, darling!

  4. I love characters who are full of a healthy dose of snark! Charley Davidson sounds like someone I will get along with just fine. This Reyes fella doesn't sound to bad either. ;) Maja was lovely enough to gift me a copy of the first book so I definitely plan to read it soon.

    Fantastic review, lovely!
