Prey by Linda Howard

Summary

Thirty-two-year-old Angie Powell has always spoken her mind, but in the presence of Dare Callahan she nurses a simmering rage. Three years ago, Dare returned home to rural Montana and opened a hunting business to rival Angie's own, forcing her to close up shop. The infuriatingly attractive Iraq war vet even had the nerve to ask Angie out, not once but twice. Before Angie leaves town, she organizes one last trip into the wilderness with a client. But the adrenaline-fueled adventure turns deadly when Angie witnesses a cold-blooded murder and finds herself on the wrong side of a gun. Then a bear comes crashing through the woods--changing the dark game completely. Luckily, Dare is camping nearby and comes to her aid. Forced together for survival, Angie and Dare must confront hard feelings, a blinding storm, and a growing attraction--while a desperate killer and a ferocious five-hundred-pound beast stalk their prey.

My Review

Prey is a tense, on the edge of your seat read that I quickly got wrapped up with, although it was a little predictable at times I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Linda Howard's writing style is fantastic, but her characters are simply fabulous, I totally adored the rough, ready, whole lot of man that is Dare Callahan. The main character Angie is my kind of girl, she is tough, does things for herself, is a bit hot tempered and shes not fussy about her appearance, I instantly liked her and she was a joy to get to know. The storyline was definitely something different for me to sink my teeth into as it's not my typical go-to genre, but I will be on the look out for more works from Linda Howard in the future.

Angie Powell is a wilderness guide, she took on her late fathers business, but the business has been going steadily downhill from Dare Callahan opened up his own business on her doorstep. Angie is forced to put the business and her home up for sale or face bankruptcy and she blames Dare! She takes one more job taking out a previous client and his business partner on a hunt, they are looking to bag themselves a black bear and bears make Angie a bit nervous, but she really needs the money.

As soon as Angie and the men are up the mountain things quickly take a turn for the worst and everything quickly goes downhill from there. Angie gets thrown into danger and with her life ultimately on the line and no-one to turn to in her need, she is overjoyed when a handsome man comes to her rescue. The pair must work together if they stand any hopes of surviving this terrifying situation.

Prey is an action packed book that is full of wonderful descriptors that will give you the chills. There is also a fun, sexy side to the novel which keeps it balanced, I loved the transformation Angie went through, she really did go on a great journey. The ending is great, I don't want to give anything away but I was really quite happy with how things turned out. Put Prey on your to-read list today if you are after a real nail biting read.
