Supernatural Racism.
It’s better when Vampires, Werewolves, and Witches all get along.
It seems to me that in most Paranormal novels there is some animosity between the supernatural species. Vampires hate werewolves, werewolves hate witches, witches hate vampires, and so on.
There’s always some thousand year old vendetta involved. Some werewolf stepped on a vampire’s toe back in bla bla bla B.C. and they’ve been at war ever since. I’m oversimplifying, but you get the point.
I’ve never really cared for the general hatred. I’m not saying they all need to be Kumbaya sitting around a campfire, singing and holding hands (where’s the fun in that?), but I don’t think that there should be any general hatred. We humans are known for being pretty intolerant and like to go to war at the drop of a hat. (It’s sad really). Why would fictional immortal character act the same way? You’d think that supernatural creatures with extreme longevity would be a little better. I mean, they’ve had plenty of time to see mortals kill each other over petty issues. They’ve had lots of opportunity to learn from mistakes as well as to grow and mature. So, with that reasoning, they should not be so quick to go to war or to hold on to petty grudges.
That was the thought process behind my characters and the way they interact. They may not be all buddy-buddy but they certainly don’t hate each other. There is a healthy respect for who and what they are, and in times of need they find ways to use each other’s strengths to get the job done. That’s not to say that they always get along while they do it. Everyone has their limits. But there is no general hatred. No, “I’m better than you,” pettiness.
I think it’s more fun when you can get the supernaturals together, working together, and pit them against the evil human enemy. And that’s precisely what I do in Soulstone. The evil Acta Sanctorum is back, they’re after the mysterious stone and they’ll destroy everything in their path to get it.
To protect it, and unlock its mysteries, it will take the Peregrinus (vampire clan), the Olde Town pack (Werewolves), and the local witches of Boston.
Now, that I think about it, I suppose there is a lot of 'supernatural racism' in books. It will be interesting to see how it is approached otherwise in Soulstone. Great guest post! :)
ReplyDeleteI liked the cuts bio about how she has super powers. Yes raising kids is definitely a juggling act. Intense cover, sure grabbed my attention! Youare right there is definitely usually prejudice among the supernaturals, it is refreshing that Katie is trying to have everyone get along.
