Rainshadow Road (Friday Harbor #2) by Lisa Kleypas

Lucy Marinn is a glass artist living in mystical, beautiful, Friday Harbor, Washington. She is stunned and blindsided by the most bitter kind of betrayal: her fiancé Kevin has left her. His new lover is Lucy’s own sister. Lucy's bitterness over being dumped is multiplied by the fact that she has constantly made the wrong choices in her romantic life. Facing the severe disapproval of Lucy's parents, Kevin asks his friend Sam Nolan, a local vineyard owner on San Juan Island, to "romance" Lucy and hopefully loosen her up and get her over her anger. Complications ensue when Sam and Lucy begin to fall in love, Kevin has second thoughts, and Lucy discovers that the new relationship in her life began under false pretenses. Questions about love, loyalty, old patterns, mistakes, and new beginnings are explored as Lucy learns that some things in life—even after being broken—can be made into something new and beautiful.

My Review

Rainshadow Road is the second book in the Friday Harbor series and the first that I have read. It could definitely be a stand alone novel, you wouldn't even know there was supposed to be a first book. I simply loved this book, it is superbly written and had such an engaging heartfelt storyline. The characters were in-depth, interesting and relate-able. I think most people will be able to relate to them on some level.

Ever since Lucy Marinn was a little girl she wanted to be a glass artist. She always had to be well behaved and sensible, as her little sister Alice had meningitis. Alice got all the attention and everything she wanted, in adult life things are much the same, Alice is still spoiled by her parents.

Lucy is very content and happy with her life, when her partner Kevin drops a bombshell. He is leaving her for her younger sister Alice. A broken hearted Lucy moves in with her best-friends, who own a little bed and breakfast in Friday Harbor.

Lucy's parent's don't take the news well and strongly disprove of Alice marrying Kevin. So Kevin and Alice come up with a plan, Kevin asks Sam Nolan (someone he knows from his childhood) to take Lucy out, so that people can see she is moving on.

Sam Nolan is very open about not wanting to commit in a relationship, but you can soon start to see a change in him when he starts spending time with Lucy.

The pair are a match made in heaven, I wish I could of banged their heads together to make them see that. It was quite frustrating. :)

The ending is perfect, I was so pleased with the outcome. Lisa Kleypas has put just a sprinkling of magic in the book, with Lucy being able to transform glass, the first time into fireflies. It was not overdone and sets the novel apart from the others in the genre.

I will be going back and reading Rainshadow Road again and again. I am now eagerly awaiting the next novel in the series 'Dream Lake' which is out in August 2012.

My favourite characters were the main ones:

Sam- He is such a good natured man, hard-working, honest and up front. Every girl needs a guy like Sam in her life.

Lucy - She is intelligent, strong and very sensible. She picks herself up, dusts herself off and gets on with life, without having to rely on others. She is kind and loving and I think most people will love her.

I just have to share some of my favourite quotes, there were so many so I will just share two:

"You couldn't stop the motion of the earth or hold back the ocean tides, or break the pull of the moon. You couldn't stop the rain or pull a shade over the sun. And one human heart was no less a force than any of the rest."

"No matter what were together. A binary star can have a distant orbit but it's still held together by gravity."
